Sadly they are removing the remains of the boating platform in the park where the Mallards and Mandarins came out to rest this summer. They have also removed the totem pole where the Treecreepers nested.

Monday 21st september at Lea Forge. Chiffchaff singing and 3 Snipe flew over.
Mike&Andy 21st September 2020
A male Stonechat at Lea Forge this morning and other than Grey Wagtail,a passing family of Swallows and a few Stock Doves, very quiet.
Highlights from Meremoor Moss this morning: Stock Dove, Sparrowhawk, Kingfisher, 2 juv Kestrel, Peregrine, c13 Mistle Thrush, c25 Meadow Pipit
Colin 18th September 2020
And at Doddington this morning, few species but a lot of birds! 470 greylag geese beating the previous record of 430 in November 2019; 693 coots beating my previous record of 684 in August 2011 and at least 500 mallard including several groups of 30 to 40 birds just released from pens and sitting on the bank waiting to be shot. Oh and 3 wigeon.
Mike&Andy 18th September 2020
2 Spotted Flycatchers were feeding in the bushes around the entrance to the old quarry site at Lea Forge this morning and in the same area,5 Greenfinches,2 Reed Buntings and a Blackcap.Song and Mistle Thrush also noted.
John 17th September 2020
My regular visit to Roe Park, below Mow Cop revealed nothing unusual except an unusually large number of young Pheasant close to rearing enclosure. I heard what I thought was a Garden Warbler singing in the vegetation/hedge bordering the lane between rail tracks and entrance to Roe Park, but since getting home and checking last dates, I’m doubting myself.
Lunch at the viewpoint/layby at Cheshire’s Close, Mow Cop: 2 x Kestrel ( one, a juv male, harrassed by 4 Meadow Pipit as it landed on a perch ), 30+ Rook circled to the East of me before they all dropped into a field out of view. 2 sightings of a single Swallow, singing Chiffchaff and calling Bullfinch & Linnet
John 16th September 2020
One less Pike in Winterley Pool!
As I sat down on one of the benches overlooking the pool, I noticed a Grey Heron ‘spear’ something – its head, neck and belly was underwater, so it was after something ‘deep’? Moments later it reared up with a large, long fish speared through its middle – a Pike.
Kestrel & Grey Wagtail at nearby Winterley Pool Farm

Two Raven over Abbeyfields estate, Sandbach 2.10pm, heading south east. Plenty of cronking (which altered me) and aerobatics.

Spent this morning on Meremoor Moss: it was windier that I remember from the forecast!
2 Green Sandpiper seen from the bridge over the railway tracks by the pool in the field. Jay, Chiffchaff, Song Thrush noted on the path towards Meremoor Moss. Two Snipe were flushed by the cattle in an adjacent field, a juv male Kestrel spent most of the 21/2 hrs I was there perched in a tree, more Jay noted along with Skylark, Swallow, House Martin, Greenfinch, Linnet and Reed Bunting. A lone Greylag Goose was not allowed to settle in the field with cattle, they we too inquisitive. On the way back I heard a Water Rail calling in the reedbed by the tunnel and in the copse by the main road, I noted Coal Tit, Goldcrest, Treecreeper and Mistle Thrush
Mike&Andy 12th September 2020
Highlight at Lea Forge this morning were 2 Whinchat which landed briefly before passing through.Just Sparrowhawk,Linnets and Chiffchaff of any other note. Also a couple of Sparrowhawk sightings at Doddington.

Borrow Pit Meadows
Spent an hour or so on the seat at the top watching passage of Swallows with some House Martins amongst them, in the time I was there saw approximately 300 birds fly threw, also there, our resident Common Buzzard was there calling all the time eventually another Common Buzzard appeared but did not join with the other. Also a flock of about 12 Goldfinches.
John 11th September 2020
As I parked up at Wybunbury, I noticed folk with rifle bags jumping into 4x4s and driving off in the direction of Doddington.
Note To Self: call in there afterwards and see if a shoot nearby has driven birds onto the pool.
Wybunbury Moss: a chirring Whitethroat, in the scrub opp. the dipping pond, greeted me as I walked down from the churchyard, 7 Cormorants perched in a distant tree, one drying its wings. Chiffchaffs still singing and Chaffinch, Bullfinch, Greenfinch and Goldfinch high up in the alders
Doddington Pool: a distant shoot could be heard coming from across the main road, perhaps in the woods / valley – Shaw’s Rough? After chatting to a bailiff, I got down to some birding: overhead were Swift, Swallows and House Martins. On the main pool, Canada & Greylag Geese, L & GC Grebe with juvs. An adult L Grebe feeding 2 juvs not 10 metres in front of me!
Lemon Pool: a Wigeon, also Chiffchaff singing, a showy but quiet Reed Warbler. Overhead 4 or 5 Raven, a couple slightly smaller than the others – another successful breeding season?
On the way home, along Jack Mills Way/Gresty Rd. as I approached the railway bridge, I saw a Buzzard being ‘bombed’ by a Peregrine
Colin 11th September 2020
At Doddington this morning the number of birds was generally lower except for Tufted Duck, whose numbers have increased up to 93. Also recorded were 2 Ravens together, flying low overhead and chatting to each other; 50 house martins, 10 swallows but no swifts.

John 7th September 2020
A speculative wander round the disused golf course on Wychewood Park yesterday morning after I abandoned my first choice. Kate has told me about the site, but I didn’t know what too expect. It’s bigger than I thought!
Lots of Chiffchaff singing, also Swallow and House Martins hawking. A very noisy Rook was calling from the electricity cables that cross the area. There was also a vocal GS Woodpecker that I heard on several occasions as I walked around. The area has lots of potential: plenty of scrub, gorse, clumps of trees and the well-established hedge that forms its boundary. Most of the pools indicated on OS maps are overgrown.
While there, I was chatting to a dog walker from Shavington and he described a bird he’d seen while on there recently – a Hobby ( or Red-footed Falcon ). The gent did say that the larger pool is man-made ( with a reedbed ), but there’s a large pool in the SE corner at Gorstyhill ( outside the boundary ), so you never know what might turn up?
Colin 7th September 2020
At Doddington last Friday (the 4th) I forgot to include a flock of 31 collared doves, all sitting on wires by the houses on the main road. I have not seen a flock this size for years. Does anybody else see big numbers of collared doves?

Oakhanger Moss this morning: and now I know why it’s been a while since I’ve been there – the biting insects!!!
A Chiffchaff was singing continuously, a short single burst of song from a Willow Warbler. A couple of Coal Tit and a Jay but little else of note. Where there was either cattle, sheep or horses grazing in the nearby fields there were plenty of Swallows hawking above them – at Oakhanger Farm, I estimated 100.
Later at nearby Toad Hole Farm, the pool fringe was overgrown and no mud showing but Swallows and House Martin were skimming and drinking. A strutting cock Pheasant and a Collared Dove added some colour
Colin 4th September 2020
Thanks to Mike and Andy for enticing me back to Doddington this morning with the promise of a few new duck species. Not as many as yours but I did manage 3 pochard, 2 wigeon and a teal to add to the 46 tufted. Also good numbers of grebes with totals, including adults and young, of 59 great crested and 22 little. At least 7 swifts still present in a feeding flock of 20 swallows, 20 sand martins and 10 house martins.
