And further along the canal two Chiffchaffs singing away and very mobile.
Colin 27th February 2021
I chose the day carefully to do a SWaBBS visit to the Borrow Pit Meadows. The sunny and very warm weather for the second day had pushed a lot of birds in to song with for example 13 dunnocks where just two earlier and five song thrushes where none earlier but the best bird was just off my plot on the salt line when I heard a chiffchaff singing for several minutes. Presumably a winter resident moved by the lovely weather!

Walked down to Congleton park this morning. Dipper on the river. Grey Wagtail on the boating platform, Kingfisher in typical flypast, Great Spotted Woodpecker drumming in the wood. Went down to the water wheel, saw a pair of Goosanders with the female very low in the water, her head was nearly submerged then the male mounted her and they mated.
John 21st February 2021
Macon Meadows this past week
species and behaviours of note include: Moorhens getting territorial, a Water Rail called this morning ( first time in 2 weeks ), a Dipper ( 16th ) and my first Grey Wagtail this month. The Grey Wagtail appeared agitated at the presence of the Dipper, with 2 Grey Wagtails seen the following day, both flicking between the muddy bank of the stream and the culvert 2/3 times a minute while I watched them. Of the birds I mentioned last week that were singing – Song Thrush & Greenfinch, both have increased from 1 to 2. Some of the willow trees are starting to bud and the first green shoots of the flowers are poking through the grass

At Doddington this morning to complete this month’s WeBS count with 418 coot. Although still a lot of ice on the water it was really nice in the sunshine to listen to skylark singing overhead and watch a treecreeper moving up the tree trunks. At least they survived last week’s ice age, better than my resident garden robin which I fear has succumbed to the cold.
