At Doddington this morning we had nice close views of a female stonechat feeding and perching on thistles. Ducks included 86 tufted, 7 wigeon, 7 goldeneye, 6 pochard, 2 shelduck and 1 shoveler. Also 40 redwing over. At Checkley Lane footpath we had 30+ red-legged partridge but no grey and at least 100 chaffinch but couldn’t turn any of them into brambling in the murky and damp conditions. Thanks for your records Mike.

A low WeBS count at Doddington today but still pretty accurate considering I only had one good eye and no telescope! tufted 63, goldeneye 4, pochard 8, shoveler 6, teal 2, little grebe 9, oystercatcher 4, grey heron 21. All of the herons were lounging about near the heronry – waiting to start nest building – or waiting for their partner to finish nest building!!

At Borrow Pit Meadows I have not seen or heard a song thrush all winter. Then as usual in late January they appear and this morning I had seven singing males. Where from? Have they been at BPM all the time just keeping quiet and keeping their heads down or have they moved in from elsewhere?

over the golf course yesterday 3 ravens, looking like a pair chasing off an intruder. Also 2 egyptian geese now on the main pond. At Doddington this morning the 4 oystercatchers are still present and looking settled (they just scraped in for a January arrival date!); 16 herons congregating by the heronry and 3 pairs of canada geese on nest sites on the island already. 88 tufted and off the water 40 fieldfare and 25 meadow pipits
